Harlow Skalwold studied art and design at New York University and Rhode Island School of Design. Influenced by Dada, process art, and the DIY punk ethic, combined with unorthodox forms of training, they consider themselves part of the Art Singulier movement. Plague Doctor
The mask was hand sewn from faux leather scraps, with vintage pearlescent cabochon eyes, and attached to an old broken animal skull. The skull has been stuffed with dried herbs, as the plague doctors of yore would fill their masks, and an amethyst, a purported healing stone. It sports a hand-knit neck ruff, and the hands are mummified squirrel paws. This piece was created with a vintage 1971 Mattel Jack-in-the-Box, altered with digitally collaged antique illustrations, with the original outfit beaded with hematite, which is thought to be beneficial for blood purification.
